Water Leak Detection: An At-Home Guide

If you’re like many Orange County homeowners, plumbing leaks can be enough to ruin your week. You have to search Google for a highly rated plumber, call to get quotes, and wait until the plumber of your choice can fit you into his schedule. Having an emergency plumber on speed dial might not be a bad idea! There are some other things you can do to prevent plumbing problems. This at-home guide to water leak detection is a great place to start!

Water Leak Detection, First Things First!

If you have a water leak, the first thing you should do is to shut off the water supply at the main valve. Not sure how to do that? Check out this great YouTube video on finding and shutting off your main water valve. After the water is off, turn on all of your faucets and outdoor spigots to completely drain your plumbing system. This is a good place to start before calling a plumber.

Finding the Leak

Next, let’s see if we can walk you through finding the leak. Sometimes the source of the leak is very obvious. If you living room ceiling is leaking and there is a bathroom directly upstairs, the bathroom is the place to check first! One of the most common causes of a bathroom water leak is the toilet since it has so many working parts. If you are unsure of where the leak is coming from, you should call a leak detection plumber immediately! At bluefrog Plumbing + Drain of Orange County we have the experience and tools necessary to detect all sorts of hidden water leaks. Call us today for a water leak diagnosis (949) 393-0933.

Can’t Find the Leak?

If you can’t find the water leak, do not fret! You should call an emergency plumber immediately since they will have the knowledge needed to diagnose your leak. While you’re waiting for the plumber to arrive, take a walk around the outside of your house and check any exposed pipes or joints. You may be able to find the cause of the leak at a pipe joint. Also, be sure to feel the pipes for wetness. Sometimes leaks come from loose pipe joints that simply need tightening.
