No Cold Water in the Shower? Here’s What To Do!

If you are given a choice to choose which option is more painful, a freezing cold shower or a boiling hot one, you may feel left without any choice at all. If you are in the bathroom for a relaxing, warm shower and the water is boiling hot, there are not many reasons for this. A malfunctioning pressure-balancing valve mostly prevents cold water from entering the tap. If you find yourself with no cold water in your shower, here are a few things you can do…

CHECK IF ALL THE FAUCETS IN THE HOUSE ARE NOT WORKING PROPERLY

If there is no cold water in your shower, you to check all the shower faucets in the house if they are working properly or not. If there are other showers with no cold water supply, look for the main water supply in the house. Someone might have accidentally turned the cold supply valve off.

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR SHOWER IS THE ONLY ONE WITH NO COLD WATER IN THE HOUSE?

If the rest of the showers in the house are working perfectly fine, but yours has no cold water, the trouble probably lies in the pressure-balancing valve. This valve controls and balances the pressure and amount of hot and cold water in the shower stream. It may stop working due to corrosion, inactivity, or the buildup of minerals and salts. If a defective pressure-balancing valve is a reason for no cold water in your shower, there’s not much that can be done. The only way to fix it is to replace it and call a professional plumber.

REPLACING THE BALANCING VALVE VS REPLACING THE SHOWER CARTRIDGE

Replacing the pressure-balancing valve may be harder than you can imagine. The reason is obvious. The valve is a part of a larger component called the shower cartridge. It is quite a task to remove the valve without dismantling the cartridge. Therefore, an easy way out from your no cold water-woes is the replacement of the shower cartridge.

HOW TO REPLACE A SHOWER CARTRIDGE?

To install a new shower cartridge, you would have to remove the old and defective one. For this purpose, a tool called Cartridge Puller is required. It will save you from the long hassle of pulling the old cartridge out. Start by turning the main supply off. Use pliers and a screwdriver to detach the faucet from the shower handle. Take the cartridge puller and remove the shower cartridge. Use grease to line the interior of the valve. Take the new cartridge and install it in place of the old one. Fix the screws and turn the main supply on. Your no cold water woes are no more!
